Recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day
At Eric Harvie School, we strive to build learning about Canadian Indigenous culture and ways of knowing throughout the school year in a range of different ways. We are also happy to renew our school wide commitment to actions from the Truth and Reconciliation Committee on this important day. The changing of the seasons and the summer solstice represents many different values and transitions for each of us, and we see this day as an opportunity for reflection and thoughtful action moving forward in our journey towards reconciliation.
Please see the attached EHS Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation for the year ahead in the side bar.
Thank you for the EHS School Council Carnival!
The EHS School Council, and specifically Jen Smith in her role as the Special Events Coordinator, put on an awesome Year-End Carnival event last night! It was really lovely to see so many family out on the lawn, enjoying the food, games and playground in a fun, low-key and relaxed atmosphere! It truly was the kind of event that helps to bring a community together.
Thank you so much for the support of our amazing school council throughout this past year! Your work may go unseen or unnoticed at times, but your efforts to help improve our school community are essential and I hope and believe that every parent is thankful when fees for field trips or new learning resources are subsidized by your efforts!
On behalf of the Chair of the School Council, Amanda Hang, and myself, we also wanted to say a big thank you to Kristin Raugust, Jana Swacynza and Jen Smith for all your efforts over the past few years on the Council executive. The insightful thoughts and questions that you brought to our meetings was so helpful, and your reliability in taking on key roles that help to make a council run is greatly appreciated!
Update to Organization Plan for September 2024
We previously shared our intended plan for how we would organize our classes to help meet the needs of our learners in an equitable way. As the number and the complexity of the learning needs of the learners that we will have in different grade levels next year becomes more clear, we are making some adjustments to how we will be organizing for September 2024.
These changes align with our goal to provide an equitable learning experience for all learners. In making these changes, we keep in mind what we know about each grade group of learners, what is developmentally appropriate for each grade level and finding creative ways to prioritize ensuring each learner develops their core skills in ELAL and Math.
To be clear, this may not be the final organizational change required. The Alberta Education funding model finalizes our funding for the year with the actual number of students that are in the building on Sept. 30. Once this date passes, we will then review our plan one final time to ensure we have the funding available (or spend out any additional funds if we continue to grow!).
| UPDATED Number of classes | Total learners per grade MAY 30 | Total learners per grade JUNE 21 | AVG learners per class JUNE 21 |
K | 4 classes (2 AM & 2 PM) | 71 | 77 | 19.5 |
Grade 1 | 3 | 73 | 71 | 23.6 |
Grade 2 | 4 | 80 | 86 | 21.5 |
Grade 3 | 3 | 80 | 79 | 26.3 |
Grade 4* | 2.5 | 63 | 63 | 21* in AM |
Grade 5 | 3 | 74 | 75 | 25.0 |
TOTAL |
| 441 | 451 |
|
- The changes that we needed to make are in grade 2 and grade 4. Due to the number of learners, the age and developmental levels, and the complexity of the learners in grade 2, we needed to make a cautious change.
- We have added a 4th grade 2 class bringing the average class size down from 27 to 21.5.
- Our numbers in grade 4 continue to be the lowest of any grade group; however, we did not want to take away the opportunity to build strong ELAL and Math skills with this group.
- As a result, with grade 4, we will make 3 instructional groups of 21 learners in the morning for ELAL and Math instruction. In the afternoons, one of the instructional groups will be split into the two other classes, resulting in 2 instructional groups of 32 learners in each group.
- Again, this plan will need to be reviewed in early October to ensure our available funding matches this plan.
Thank you for your understanding as we venture to provide the best possible scenario for all learners in our building.

Lost & Found
The final lost and found clearout begins! We will have it outside the school at the end of the day for the remainder of the year. Anything left in the Lost & Found after the last day of school will be donated to charity. Thank you! It may be hard to believe…but your child has lost something this year!
