Learner devices & communication during the school day
We have had an increase in the number of learners that are wearing smart watches in recent weeks. We will be putting out a separate communication from the weekly Connect message soon to talk more about this and to help ensure they are used in a safe, respectful manner. The ability to take pictures and send messages during the day presents some possible privacy, digital citizenship or communication concerns that we would like to have a clear plan on how teachers and families can support learners in developing good habits on using these devices.
The main concern we want to express right away is with learners contacting home during the school day without our school staff knowing of the contact. We ask that all contact between home and school during the school day comes through the office to help ensure clear communication and that everyone has the same message. Thank you for your support!
School Spirit Days!
We know many families celebrate a range of holidays this time of year, and we enjoy being able to enjoy this time of year and opportunities to learn about different cultures and their celebrations. We do try to keep our focus on learning throughout the next two weeks, and including some fun school spirit days can be a way to keep all our spirits bright!
Monday Dec.18 – Do You Wanna Build a Snowman (dress like a snowman or in silvery/blue colours)
Tuesday Dec.19 - Mad about Plaid
Wednesday Dec.20 - Tree Topper Day (festive hair or hats) + Christmas Carols in the gym in the afternoon
Thursday Dec.21 - Wear your favourite pjs
Friday Dec.22 - dress like your favourite holiday character
Families Helping Families
Thank you very much for your generous support of this school wide initiative. We will be delivering the items on Monday over to Colonel J Fred Scott School for the items to be directed to these families. The school and the families are always very appreciative of our school communities efforts! If a last minute item comes to the school Monday morning, we will add it into the delivery!
Thank you’s - lots lately!
Thank you very much to the many volunteers that helped to make the EHSES Casino fundraiser a success! This fundraising will be so helpful next year as our school population grows and as we continue to build great learning opportunities and resources. Your time is greatly appreciated!
On behalf of the EHS staff, we would like to extend a sincere thank you to the EHS School Council for all your support of our staff the past few weeks. Your generous support of a meal on the evening of conferences helped to make a long day a bit easier for all of us. We also greatly appreciate the considerate little ways you keep us going, including the “tea wreath” - a caffeinated teacher is generally a happy teacher! Thank you again!
Lost and Found
Our lost and found is reaching all time high levels! We are 99% sure that these items came from children that attend our school, so our goal is to get them back to families as much as possible. We placed the items out for families to look for items during conferences and during the choir performances the past couple weeks. We will keep these items at the school until December 21 and then will be donating unclaimed items to a charity. Please note that any items that are lost between now and the winter break we will hold on to in to January to attempt to connect owners to lost mittens as much as possible too!
Reminder: School Parking & Pedestrians
As we shared in past Connect messages, the City of Calgary has made a change in the parking areas around many schools. This is in connection with upcoming changes to provincial bussing regulations and an increase in the number of buses that will come to Eric Harvie School.
The diagram below shows these designated areas:
RED = Bus Zone - no stopping during the school day (except designated buses)
YELLOW = “Kiss and Drop” zone - no leaving your vehicle unattended, 10 min. Max during drop off and pick up times
GREEN = Parking allowed zones
PURPLE = Please be extremely careful at this intersection and ensure pedestrians are able to cross safely
