Building Our Community of Learners - Sept 21
This Thursday, September 21, we will be holding our version of a “Meet the Teacher” Night to welcome all of our K-4 families. We call this our Building our Community of Learners event as it is an opportunity for your to find out more about our school, our teachers, our classrooms and we will also gather some information about your children. The event runs from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM - please see the attached flyer for full details.
Parent Reading Program
Eric Harvie School would like to start a parent reading program for some of our learners. We are looking for any parents who would like to come and read with students. Ideally, we are looking for volunteers who could come in for at least 30 minutes, 2-4 days a week.
if you are interested in reading with students, please email Lesley Tait lmtait@cbe.ab.ca
Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is held yearly in September to encourage and support communities around reconciliation events and activities. The goal is to create awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of Indian Residential Schools through Orange Shirt Day activities, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.
This year, Orange Shirt Day falls on our Glenbow Ranch field trip on September 28. We encourage students to wear orange on that day and we will be recognizing the day with an assembly before leaving for the trip and during our learning on the land at Glenbow Ranch.
If you would like to purchase an Orange Shirt Day T-Shirt, (optional) we recommend purchasing directly from the Orange Shirt Day organization. They hold a yearly design contest and every year’s shirt features that year’s design winner. All proceeds from these sales go back into supporting Indigenous communities.

CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.
Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millenium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.
Picking up children early during the day
We are running the office area with a little less administrative staff this year, and as a result we are hoping to be very efficient! If you need to pick up a child for an appointment or to leave early during the day, please call the office 5-10 minutes in advance of arriving to let the office staff know. It is challenging to coordinate all the different appointments each day, and this small change will allow us to help keep you on time for your appointments too.
Terry Fox Run - Thank you!!
EHS had a great time supporting the Terry Fox Foundation during our annual Terry Fox Run over at TMC today!
If families would like to donate online to The Terry Fox Foundation, donations may be made on our school link https://schools.terryfox.ca/EricHarvieSchool or we will be accepting cash donations until the end of next week. We are around halfway to our fundraising goal! Any support is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your support and all the volunteers who made this year’s Terry Fox Run a big success!
Glenbow Ranch Learning Experience - Volunteers Needed!
We are looking for volunteers to help support our return to an Eric Harvie School tradition - exploration and learning outdoors at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park! This year we are fortunate to be able to go on the day we observe Orange Shirt Day, and some of our learning at the park will be focused on Indigenous ways of knowing.
Volunteers would need to be available for the full day on September 28, and would stick together with a group of around 8-10 learners to visit stations set-up around the park.
All Volunteers MUST have their current and valid Police Clearance AND the Annual Volunteer Registration Form (blue form that came home to you the first week) filled out and returned to the school.

Thank you in advance for your support!
Dogs on School and City Property
We greatly appreciate that many families take advantage of the opportunity to walk their children to and from school each day and that this often includes family dogs. Please note that the city of Calgary Bylaw asks that dogs remain on the sidewalk area as they are not allowed on playground or school grounds areas. Here is the link to the City of Calgary website for more information: https://www.calgary.ca/bylaws/...
Past Updates
Roots of Empathy - Call for Babies and Volunteers
Eric Harvie has been a Roots of Empathy school since we began and community support made that possible. Families have volunteered their time and their babies to be part of this incredible program and parent council has provided funding. Our Roots of Empathy team needs the friends of EHS to spread the word to expecting parents and prospective volunteers.
We may be unable to offer the program to as many classes as we normally have this year as we have a very limited number of volunteer instructors to lead our program. If you might know someone that is interested in taking the training for this role, please let us know at the school office.
The program is best suited to babies who are four months old by September 1 but we're happy to talk with any interested families. Please email bcstrand@cbe.ab.ca if you would like more information or have any questions. Thank you!
Start of Year Forms
Most of the yearly start of the year forms moved to an online format through your MyCBE account. These include the Demographic Verification form that helps ensure we are able to contact you in an emergency, and the annual authorization forms that pertain to photos around the school. Please take a moment to complete these forms in the coming days to ensure we have this information.
We will be sending a couple of paper copy forms home at the start of the year that are not a part of these system wide forms. These will include forms for walking distance learning activities near the school.
If you require any assistance with making your MyCBE account, please visit this website: https://www.cbe.ab.ca/support/...
EHS Mobile Phone & Digital Device Policy
The age of the learners at our Kindergarten to grade 4 school generally means that their is very little need for our learners to bring a mobile phone with them to school each day. However, we respect that having a mobile phone for safety reasons when a child is walking home from school may be a choice made by families. If you choose to send a mobile device to school with your child for these reasons, please ensure that they understand that these devices stay in their bags during the school day. We also ask that you not communicate with your child through this device during the day, as we ask that all communication comes through the main office to ensure messages are received clearly. Thank you!
Donations for Ignite Learning
Eric Harvie school is looking for items such as games, building materials like lego, kinex, blocks… or any other fun activities that could be connected to learning to expand our Ignite Learning library. These items will be used for our curriculum connected Ignite time at the beginning of the day, by all classes. This helps our learners to get themselves regulated and ready to learn. If you happen to have something at your house that you were going to donate, please consider donating it at EHS. You can bring these items into the office. Thank you!
