Parent Reading Volunteers!

We are looking for parents who are able to come in and read one on one with students. Ideally we would love to have parents (or grandparents!) who are able to read between 2-5 days a week for a period of 20-40 minutes. No special experience required!

We are hoping to start our parent reading program after the winter break the week of January 5th or 12th. The reading program can continue for a preset period of time or until the end of May.

If this is something you are interested in, please email Lesley Tait at lmtait@cbe.ab.ca

Thank you!

Families Helping Families

A long standing tradition at Eric Harvie School is our Families Helping Families campaign, where we support families in need at holiday time from Colonel J Fred Scott School in the Whitehorn neighborhood in Calgary. This tradition originated from past EHS staff members that previously worked in that school taking initiative to support families in need around the holiday time.

We are calling on your kindness and generosity to help support families in need during the holiday season. Eric Harvie School will be supporting 6 families in Calgary this year, and each grade team has been assigned a specific family to sponsor. We have created links for each classroom’s Google Sheet sign-up gift tracking sheet as listed below.

Please read through the list of needs and wants for your family. Some families have many kids so please make sure to scroll along the spreadsheet. If you are in a position where you can support a family and see an item you would like to contribute, that is very appreciated. We are not looking to buy every item on the list but we do want our families to get some of their needs and wants. Please ensure that the items contributed are new.

Thank you very much for your support…and to Jen S. for helping to make the spreadsheets below much easier to use this year!

Here is the link to access the spreadsheet:

You will see tabs along the bottom of the document for each grade team. If you find your student’s list is nearing completion please look at the other lists as some may not be. Thank you again for your support of Calgary families in need!

Lost and Found Alert

We donate the unclaimed items from our lost and found to a charity each December and June. Please ensure you check for lost items prior to the last day of school in December. We will also have the learners look through it with their classes as we try to help build more independence in keeping track of belongings…clearly a work in progress! Thank you!

Building independent thinking and respectful outdoor play

This week began with a significant snowfall on Monday morning, and this does create a lot of fun for our learners - it was an awesome day as the lead photo for the Weekly News shows!

As the week goes on, we do start to see an increase in the number of arguments and snow related injuries that occur. We wanted to share the messages that we focus on with the learners so that you can re-inforce those messages at home also.

  • We allow learners to slide down the hill, but encourage them to do it safely by:
    • Watching out for others down the hill - it is your responsibility to not run into someone else. One at a time sliding, please.
    • Slide safely - don’t slide where you will run into a metal grate.
    • Think about how you are dressed to keep warm later in the day. For example: If you are wearing only sweatpants and a sweatshirt…you will get very wet and cold later in the day.
  • Snow seems to become a hot commodity later in the week! When they are building and playing with snow our focus is:
    • We share the snow - no one “owns” the snow. Invite others to play together with you
    • Snow stays on the ground…throwing snowballs and ice chunks is a very hazardous choice at school.
    • Be respectful - don’t intentionally wreck something another person has built, as this makes it less fun for them.

EHS Enhancement Society - casino volunteer positions filled!

The EHSES has put in a lot of time and effort to help secure this amazing fundraising opportunity that provides around $70 000 of support for the learners in our school. They would like to extend a huge THANK YOU out to the volunteers that have stepped up and have filled all of the spots for the casino fundraiser next week! They greatly appreciate the donation of a few hours of time to help make this possible! These fundraisers help to support your children in many ways:

  • Around $10 000 annually towards buses to amazing field trip opportunities
  • Funds to help support families that are financially unable to pay for events such as swimming
  • Amazing learning opportunities such as this year’s dance residency with Sound Kreations
  • Technology to create amazing learning experiences such as robotics equipment for all ages, a 3D printer, and new iPads or Chromebooks.

 Thank you again!

Music performance plan for this year

Eric Harvie School has traditionally had an optional choir opportunity in the Fall each year, leading to a winter concert performance. For this year we are trying out a different plan that offers a performance opportunity for all learners.

We will be hosting a winter concert event with two shows on Thursday, February 5, 2026 for all grade 1-3 classes. There will be a daytime and evening performance.

Grade 4-5 classes will put on a concert performance on May 28, 2026. This will also include an evening performance.

We are still finalizing the details of a spring event for our Kindergarten families and we will share more information closer to the date.
