Grade 2 Food Bank Collection

Our grade 2 team has had a long term focus on what helps to build strong communities. They are all going (or have already gone) on week long learning experiences in downtown Calgary to get hands on learning about different ways that communities grow and thrive. As part of this learning, the learners wanted to have an action. that they felt would have an impact on their own community. Starting on Monday they will be starting a Food Bank Collection School Wide. The learners made posters for around the school and they will be working to organize and prepare the donations for the Calgary Food Bank. Please see the flyer below and there is also a Food Bank Wish List Items

Reminder: personal devices and smartwatches

The CBE has a policy in place to ensure that all CBE schools are following the province-wide directive to keep personal devices out of classrooms and schools. The Alberta government enacted this legislation in August 2024 to provide clarity on how schools need to approach digital devices and social media within the school setting.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to read the full Administrative Regulation, it is available here: https://cbe.ab.ca/GovernancePolicies/AR6008.pdf

The key elements of this policy that parents need to understand are:

  • Personal Mobile Devices (PMD’s) are defined as any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet, such as a cellphone, tablet, laptop, gaming device or smartwatch.
  • Students may not use PMDs during instructional time, unless such use is approved by the classroom teacher to facilitate learning activities.
  • Student PMDs are valuable electronic devices. The security and storage of these items is the sole responsibility of the owner or user. CBE assumes no responsibility for the safety, security, loss, repair or replacement of student PMDs.
  • Parents are asked to refrain from contacting their child/student on their PMD during the school day to avoid unnecessary distraction. Parents can contact the school office who can facilitate contact with their child/student during the school day, if needed.
  • K-9 schools will enforce “Away for the Day” guidelines for student PMDs. This specifically means PMDs are not used inside the school building at any time without permission from a teacher or administrator and students put away any PMDs they have brought to school before entering the school.

At Eric Harvie School, we have noticed that as the year progresses more students have been wearing smartwatches and teachers have found it difficult to enforce the regulations above. We will follow the regulations as stated above, and we ask that these devices stay home as much as possible. Some watches may be capable of a “school mode” function, but we are needing to ask all families to respect the guidelines above so that we can ensure a device free environment as the regulations above seek to create.

Please contact Ben Strand or Lesley Tait if you have any questions that we can support in answering in the application of these guidelines. Thank you for your support of this regulation designed to provide a safe, distraction free learning environment for all.

2026-2027-School Year

As we prepare for the next school year, it would be helpful to know if your child will not be returning to Eric Harvie School for the next school year.

Unless we hear otherwise we will assume your child will be attending EHS for the next school year.

Please email Josie Cesario at jccesario@cbe.ab.ca  if your child(ren) will not be returning next year. We appreciate your assistance with our planning.
