After School Supervision
Our staff provides after school supervision until 2:40 pm (or 12:10 pm on Fridays) to help ensure that learners start on their way home. Our teachers in grades 1 and 2 endeavor to ensure younger learners are picked up directly by caregivers. For learners in grade 3 and up, we are placing trust in them finding their way home, or coming to the office if they have any issues with heading home.
We are recently having issues that are occurring when older students are staying at the school past 2:40 pm (or 12:10 pm on Fridays). Some students are not making safe choices, being disrespectful to others or getting involved in physical altercations. We would like to remind parents of two key points about these situations:
- Parents are responsible for their own child, and for the decisions that their child makes, after supervision has finished at the school. If parents are choosing to let their children stay at the school to play after this time, they are responsible for the safety and actions of their child.
- While the school does generally not get involved in situations that happen after school hours, problems that involving Eric Harvie School students can have consequences that align with the CBE Progressive Discipline policy when there is sufficient connection to the school environment, school community, student safety, or the learning environment.
We please ask that parents that are choosing to have their children stay at the school grounds unsupervised after school ensure that their child understands these implications. Either Mrs. Tait or Mr. Strand are generally in the office for quite a while after the bell if students ever have an emergency, but it is important that parents help ensure their child understands the responsibility that they are taking on by being at school on their own or walking home independently.
Parent Reading Volunteers!
We are looking for parents who are able to come in and read with students. Ideally, we would love to have parents who are able to read between 2-5 days a week for a period of 20-40 minutes. This is a great support for learners that would benefit from more time reading aloud and consolidating the learning from in class reading instruction. No experience necessary – we will help set you up!
If this is something you are interested in, please email Lesley Tait at lmtait@cbe.ab.ca .
Thank you!
Recognizing Remembrance Day
We will be having an assembly at 10:45 am on Tuesday, November 10th for us to recognize Remembrance day and the sacrifices of so many Canadians that have helped to make our country a peaceful place to live. In an elementary school setting we focus on learning about what Remembrance Day symbolizes and about how we can all continue to promote peace throughout our lives. We will have a musical presentation by grade 4 learners and grade 3 work will also be shared through some poems, artwork and writing.
Parents are welcome to attend the assembly if they wish and we are planning on the assembly running from 10:45 am to 11:20 am. Thank you!
Preparing for the weather
With cooler temperatures arriving and Calgary's weather often changing unexpectedly, we kindly ask that students come to school prepared for the conditions each day. Dressing in layers and bringing weather-appropriate outerwear helps students stay comfortable during outdoor recesses and activities.
A warm jacket, hat, gloves or mittens, and appropriate footwear can make a big difference as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure our students are ready to learn and play comfortably in all seasons.
Jacket Racket!
We are excited to be partnering with Parent Council in supporting the Jacket Racket collection campaign! As the weather gets colder, many families in our community can benefit from warm winter clothing.
We are collecting clean, gently worn jackets of all sizes for children from Kindergarten through to Grade 12. If you have jackets that your family has outgrown or no longer uses, please consider donating them to help keep others warm this winter.
Donation Details:
- Clean, gently worn jackets only
- All sizes welcome
- Donations can be dropped off at the school office
Thank you for your generosity and support. Together with TMC School, we can make a meaningful difference for families in our community this winter.
Donation Deadline: November 10
