EHS Supports Jacket Racket 2024!

The Eric Harvie Peace Ambassadors will soon be starting our annual drive for Jacket Racket.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students to help other children here in our city, by donating warm outerwear that they no longer need.   It is a valuable experience for our students and reinforces our school’s commitment to peace and citizenship education. Our Peace Ambassadors will collect items from classrooms each morning.

This year’s Jacket Racket collection will run beginning on Wednesday October 15th, and ending on Thursday, October 24th.

Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization that collects and provides warm coats, snow pants, hats, scarves, and mittens to students who need them.  Every year from mid-October to late November, Jacket Racket volunteers collect approximately 4,000 gently used coats, which are sorted and distributed to children in need through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. Many Jacket Racket volunteers are former CBE teachers who have seen shivering students come and go from school wearing little to no protection from the cold. There has been an increasing demand for warm clothing in past years.  Despite this growing demand, Jacket Racket has been successful in filling it with the help of the generosity of people like our EHS families.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Please take some time with your children to go through their winter items.  It is that time of year when we all realize that hats, mittens, boots, snow pants, and coats have been outgrown!  Please give them a wash and put them in a bag. Please list the items and sizes on the outside of the bag.  We also accept adult sizes as many older students need help to stay warm in the winter as well!  Toddler items will also be accepted for younger siblings.

Thank you for your support of our project!

EHS Peace Assembly Playlist

Our Peace Assembly this month focused on “Being Present”. Ask your child to share with you some of their learning experiences on this idea.

Quite a few of our learners have been talking about listening to our peace songs at home so we thought we would let you know what some of them are so that you can make your own playlist at home if you would like. We use these songs throughout the day and during Peace Assemblies to spread kindness and teach skills. You can find these songs on streaming platforms and Youtube. We will keep adding to this song list as we learn them.

  1. Peace in My Fingers by Susan Salidor
  2. Kind by Stephanie Leavell
  3. The Kindness Song by Nick and Becky Drake
  4. Count on Me by Bruno Mars
  5. The Boundaries Song by Hopscotch
  6. Try Everything by Shakira

Safe parking and driving around the school

Last week we included a message about safety around the school, and included some points focused on parking and driving around the school. I am including it down below again as we also discussed this at the EHS School Council meeting this week and added another key point:

Traffic safety around the school:

  • All of the roads around EHS are designated as a school zone - carefully following the speed limits and being prepared for children crossing the road is a must. For example, doing a u-turn in an intersection with a crosswalk is dangerous with children crossing the roads.
  • The parking zones around the school are enforced by Calgary Police. They were established to ensure there is room for more buses as our school grows, and to provide locations to drop off or park. As the weather gets colder, we anticipate more driving traffic, and following these signs will ensure safe drop offs and pick-ups.
  • To help with reminders to follow the posted parking rules, Administration at EHS will be placing “friendly reminder parking tickets” on cars that are not following the posted signage on occasion.
  • If you observe drivers that are not following the laws of the road and being unsafe, you are encouraged to report them through the Calgary Police non-emergency line (403-266-1234) as they happen with details, or use the following options: https://www.calgary.ca/cps/traffic/traffic-service-requests.html
  • Pedestrians can also do their part by please using the crosswalks only. If you role model proper crossing rather than jay-walking, you are supporting your child to be safe in the future also.

We understand that following posted guidelines and rules of the road may take a bit more time in your busy morning, however, we greatly appreciate your commitment to keeping everyone safe around the community.

Adjustments to Peace Assembly plan

This year, we will be trying a bit of a shift in how we present and share examples of your child’s learning in the year ahead. Eric Harvie School has had a strong tradition of Peace Assemblies for many years, which were a presentation of learning from a group of classes.  This year, we are having smaller, school-wide peace assemblies roughly once a month that are designed to be about our learners sharing how they are growing through our focus on peace education. This will look like multiple classes sharing a small piece of work at these short assemblies (20-30 minute), with the target audience being our own learners, so that they can learn from each other in how we can build a peaceful community together. Parents are absolutely welcome to attend these if they wish, however we just want to be transparent that these will be different than in past years. When these events involve a short musical presentation by a class or grade, we will also share a video of this with those parents after the event.

We will be having other formal events for sharing each learner's learning growth throughout the year. These will be the best opportunities for having an in-depth look into the learning of your child. Each child will then have a better opportunity to share their learning together with you, and to be able to speak more to their process and new understandings. We will share the dates for these events with parents later in the school year and ensure families have time to adjust schedules to attend.

Thank you for your support as we endeavor to keep our focus on the process of learning and building a peaceful community together.
