Plan for October 31
At Eric Harvie School, we welcome all families to be an active part of our school community. As a public school, learning about the different customs that cultures from around the world celebrate is part of both the Alberta curriculum and in learning more about each other from a perspective of mutual understanding.
This year, Thursday, October 31 is both Halloween and the Hindu celebration of Diwali. We have families within our school that avidly celebrate Halloween, families that will be focused on celebrating Diwali, and families that will be celebrating neither. Our goal for this day is to ensure we still have a day of learning, and that each child can feel accepted to take part in the day from the perspective of their families beliefs.
In past years we have asked for Halloween costumes to only be worn in the afternoon, however we have noted that the anticipation and amount of time required to put on the costumes part way through the day detracts from having a focus on learning. As a result, we are going to try the following plan this year:
- Learners can choose to wear costumes if they wish for the entire day. We would like those that choose not to wear a costume to also feel welcome.
 - Costumes need to allow students to still be able to focus on their learning, especially in the key morning learning blocks. Some examples to help explain this, from past school Halloween experiences:
 - If you have a large or inflatable costume that makes it hard to sit in your chair, just bring it to school in the morning and put it on for some activities after lunch.
 - If a costume has a magic wand that is casting too many spells during work time…we would ask that it is put away to help the focus on learning.
 - If a child will need to go to the washroom 15 times during the day to check their elaborate make-up and is unable to focus on learning as a result, I would suggest toning down the make-up for school time (and having an awesome time with it in the evening!)

- Costumes must be appropriate for a school setting. This includes no masks, no weapons and no violent themed costumes. Halloween can obviously be spooky, but an elementary school setting should not be encouraging violence.
 - If costumes do not meet the above guidelines, we will ask the child to remove it during the day.
 - As it is a long school day, you may also want to ensure they have any extra clothes they may need if they get tired of wearing it.
 - Due to allergies and ensuring that each family gets to decide what their child eats, please do not send any treats to share with your children.

It is certainly not my intention to suggest that we will not have some fun together in the afternoon on October 31st. My main message is that each day of school is an important chance to improve each learner; I would like to ensure we keep the learning going on this day and that every member of our community feels welcomed and a part of the day too. We appreciate you reviewing the basics of these guidelines with your child.
Extra Rolling Pins?
Eric Harvie school is looking for donations of a few items that will be used as part of our work with pottery and clay. If you have any extra items from the list below that you are able to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
- Rolling pins
 - Embossed rolling pins
 - Texture tools (play doh texture tools, old stamps, texture mats etc)
 - Wooden dowels
 - Wooden spoons (typical kitchen size)

Safe parking and driving around the school
Please be mindful of our local residents and avoid parking in front of garbage and recycling bins. When bins are blocked, waste is not collected, causing inconvenience for everyone. Let’s work together to be respectful to our neighbors and keep traffic running smoothly and safely throughout the morning and afterschool rush.
