Keeping Active on Blue Days

This week brought extreme cold weather…and next week may be more of the same! Here are some of the ways that we have worked together as a team here at EHS to keep our learners as active as possible this week:

Drumfit:

This past week we pumped up 60 exercise balls and had a great time learning about rhythm with our Drumfit equipment. It is a mix of aerobic exercise and drumming that helped to keep classes moving and motivated during Phys Ed classes and during our indoor lunches. Here is a quick example of the kinds of routines they tried out: Drumfit example

Yoga:

We are very fortunate to have a full set of yoga mats and blocks for 2 classes to use and we regularly converted our main hub area into a yoga studio! It is helpful as a more calming activity and it is amazing to see how focused the learners can be during a 10-15 minute session. If you haven’t heard of Cosmic Kids Yoga at home before…you may want to try it out on some of these cold days too!

Bouldering Wall:

Again, we are very fortunate to have our bouldering wall as a resource to provide a different option for a body break. It is a great whole body workout and certainly provides development for coordination, flexibility and balance. It does make walking down the hallway a challenge and provides a detour for our caretakers…but it is always a hit when we break it out.

EHS Peace Assembly Playlist

This month we are adding a new peace song to our repertoire.  It is called Respect… no not by Aretha Franklin but by Nick and Becky Drake.  I highly recommend taking a listen to this one at home.

Quite a few of our learners have been talking about listening to our peace songs at home so we thought we would let you know what some of them are so that you can make your own playlist at home if you would like. We use these songs throughout the day and during Peace Assemblies to spread kindness and teach skills. You can find these songs on streaming platforms and Youtube. We will keep adding to this song list as we learn them.

  1. Respect by Nick and Becky Drake (NEW**)
  2. Peace in My Fingers by Susan Salidor
  3. Kind by Stephanie Leavell
  4. The Kindness Song by Nick and Becky Drake
  5. Count on Me by Bruno Mars
  6. The Boundaries Song by Hopscotch
  7. Try Everything by Shakira
