Roots of Empathy program
We have had the Roots of Empathy program at our school for many years, and it is an amazing opportunity for children to learn about growth, empathy and care for others through a connection with a new baby. We would really appreciate any parents of new babies (currently between 2-4 months old) that are able to volunteer their time to come in to classrooms once a month to help keep this program going. I convinced a friend of mine to take part in the program in the past, and she truly enjoyed the experience from her end also.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Ben Strand at bcstrand@cbe.ab.ca
EHS Supports Jacket Racket 2024!
The Eric Harvie Peace Ambassadors will soon be starting our annual drive for Jacket Racket. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to help other children here in our city, by donating warm outerwear that they no longer need. It is a valuable experience for our students and reinforces our school’s commitment to peace and citizenship education. Our Peace Ambassadors will collect items from classrooms each morning.
This year’s Jacket Racket collection will run beginning on Wednesday October 15th, and ending on Thursday, November 24th.
Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization that collects and provides warm coats, snow pants, hats, scarves, and mittens to students who need them. Every year from mid-October to late November, Jacket Racket volunteers collect approximately 4,000 gently used coats, which are sorted and distributed to children in need through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. Many Jacket Racket volunteers are former CBE teachers who have seen shivering students come and go from school wearing little to no protection from the cold. There has been an increasing demand for warm clothing in past years. Despite this growing demand, Jacket Racket has been successful in filling it with the help of the generosity of people like our EHS families.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Please take some time with your children to go through their winter items. It is that time of year when we all realize that hats, mittens, boots, snow pants, and coats have been outgrown! Please give them a wash and put them in a bag. Please list the items and sizes on the outside of the bag. We also accept adult sizes as many older students need help to stay warm in the winter as well! Toddler items will also be accepted for younger siblings.
Thank you for your support of our project!
IMPORTANT Safety messages for around the school
As our school grows, it will continue to be a challenge to ensure everyone is safe coming to and from school. All of the following points could use a bold, underlined, caps locked font due to their importance…I will save your eyes from that, but truly hope we can all work together to ensure safety for all children:
Traffic safety around the school:
- All of the roads around EHS are designated as a school zone - carefully following the speed limits and being prepared for children crossing the road is a must. For example, doing a u-turn in an intersection with a crosswalk is dangerous with children crossing the roads.
- The parking zones around the school are enforced by Calgary Police. They were established to ensure there is room for more buses as our school grows, and to provide locations to drop off or park. As the weather gets colder, we anticipate more driving traffic, and following these signs will ensure safe drop offs and pick-ups.
- If you observe drivers that are not following the laws of the road and being unsafe, you are encouraged to report them through the Calgary Police non-emergency line (403-266-1234) as they happen with details, or use the following options: https://www.calgary.ca/cps/traffic/traffic-service-requests.html
- Pedestrians can also do their part by please using the crosswalks only. If you role model proper crossing rather than jay-walking, you are supporting your child to be safe in the future also.
Supervision by EHS staff:
- Our school staff provides supervision at the front and back of the school for grade 1-5 students at 8:05 am in the morning, and until 3:25 pm (12:10 pm on Fridays).
- Please do not drop off your child prior to 8:05 am. They are not supervised during this time and it is your responsibility as a parent to ensure their safety during this time. We understand families are very busy, but it is your responsibility to ensure your child is supervised by someone during the time prior to 8:05 am.
- At the end of the day, we try to ensure any children that were not picked up come to the office for us to contact their family. Please also encourage your child to know to come to the main office if they do not see you or their caregiver at the end of the day.
Safety on the property:
- Please follow the bylaw about no dogs on the school property. Dogs must remain on the sidewalks - even while you are picking up your child. Either don’t bring the dogs, or have your children come meet you at a spot on the sidewalk.
- After the end of the school day, it is each family’s responsibility to supervise their own children on the playground or around the school.

Eric Harvie Peace Assembly Song List
Quite a few of our learners have been talking about listening to our peace songs at home so we thought we would let you know what some of them are so that you can make your own playlist at home if you would like. We use these songs throughout the day and during Peace Assemblies to spread kindness and teach skills. You can find these songs on streaming platforms and Youtube. We will keep adding to this song list as we learn them.
- Peace in My Fingers by Susan Salidor
- Kind by Stephanie Leavell
- The Kindness Song by Nick and Becky Drake
- Count on Me by Bruno Mars
- The Boundaries Song by Hopscotch
- Try Everything by Shakira
Don't miss out on school messages!
Due to federal legislation (Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation, or CASL), parents/guardians need to subscribe if you want to continue receiving commercial electronic messages from your child’s school and the Calgary Board of Education. These include messages on school topics such as picture days, student fees, field trip costs, yearbooks, fun lunches, fundraisers and more. https://www.cbe.ab.ca/about-us/policies-and-regulations/casl/Pages/default.aspx
