Thank you to our entire EHS School Council!
As a learning community we are all so fortunate to have a strong, active School Council and Enhancement Society to help us to continue to build up for great learning opportunities…even if you don’t realize it! I have been involved in schools that do not have a strong council in the past, and it makes it so much more challenging to have in residencies, offer busing free of charge for field trips, to build a solid base of technology, and so much more.
We have a few EHS School Council Members that are moving on after doing so much great work over the past few years. We would like to thank Andrea Kardos, Joanna Kitchen and Amanda Hang for all your work in your roles last year. In Amanda’s role as the Chair of the council she has truly gone above and beyond to help have a council that was inclusive and that heard a range of voices in shaping the plans and hopes for the council. She will still be around the school for a few more years and we are so grateful for her MANY contributions to our school over the years! We wish her all the best in her move back into teaching with the CBE! We may see her again as a substitute teacher soon enough!
Class Placement Plan for September 2025
Learner placements are decided collaboratively by teaching staff and administration. The teachers work together closely in creating lists and balancing many factors, such as academic abilities, learning styles, gender mix, specific learning needs and positive learning connections. This is a very thoughtful task as teachers think of the best interest of each child as they create class lists. If you do wish to email me a specific educational consideration it will be read. However, there is no commitment on the school to accommodate specific classroom requests. Please do not request a specific teacher, as all our teaching staff are excellent!
Our plan over the past years for letting families know about their grade 1-5 child’s class placement was to have an email from the teacher the day before classes begin. It was very rare that we made changes after the first day of school. We are making some changes to this plan to meet a few challenges we have seen developing. We are currently receiving many more new registrations over the summer than we have seen in prior years. We have seen that the placement process for new students that we are just meeting has occasionally resulted in inequities across class groupings. These inequities can then have an impact on the teaching and learning for classrooms for the remainder of the year. Next year, we will be adopting a practice used in multiple other CBE schools where we may make some adjustments to class lists after the first day of classes.
On August 29, 2025, teachers will be reaching out to families with introductions and instructions for the first day of school. Please note that the teacher your child meets on the first day may not be their permanent teacher for the entire year, and we encourage you to prepare your child for this possibility. The beginning of the school year is a crucial time for establishing a positive learning environment, and I want to assure you that our teachers will work collaboratively in teams to support learners through any necessary changes. We will also provide clear communication and rationale to families when changes need to be made after the first day of classes. However, due to the current complexities in our enrollment situation, we may not be able to finalize classroom placements until after the second full week of school.
Our top priority is ensuring that every student has a successful learning experience, and we appreciate your patience as we work through this process. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me directly. We are balancing many factors to make learning equitable in all classrooms, and we will not be able to accommodate individual requests for classroom changes.
Staffing Updates:
We would like to share with the school community the full list of staff that are moving on to new adventures next year. We are very thankful for all of their hard work this year and throughout their time at EHS:
Tessa Arnett - Grade 3 temporary position
Ginger Brie-DeBoni - Literacy and Numeracy Intervention (plus Grade 4 to start the year!)
Laura Hall - Grade 3 and Learning Leader position
Cassandra Davis - Grade 4 temporary position
Our learners will have an opportunity to wish “Farewell for now, Friend!” to all of our staff that are moving on to new adventures during our year-end assembly. We are so grateful for their hard work and support of our learners during their time at Eric Harvie School.
The majority of our staff are returning back next year, including all of our Support Staff roles. We are also thrilled to welcome in a few new (and returning) faces for next year!
Zainab Petiwala - will be returning again for a Grade 1 temporary position (until at least Feb 2026)
