Upcoming Days of Significance - CBE Days of Significance Calendar

Great questions to ask your child about school!

“Tell me about the learning you did about Pink Shirt Day.”

We celebrated all the different ways that we learn about kindness this past week. Some classes had shared activities with their “mentor” or buddy class - many of our Kindergarten and Grade 3 learners worked together on this for example. Other classes were focused on ideas such as connecting Black History month to demonstrating kindness among everyone in our community.

For the weeks ahead…

“I hear you started Gymnastics in PE! What was your favourite activity?”

All classes will be beginning our gymnastics unit this week. Instruction begins with floor exercises focused on balance and coordination skills, and will later expand to more refined movements. Focusing on building overall body control is a key part of this learning.

“Tell me about your reading groups. What was the most interesting thing you learned (or read) in your group?”

During the Professional Development day our grade teams worked on plans for the next steps in supporting learning reading skills. In younger grades, this included looking at adjusting groupings to meet current learning needs, and thinking about new strategies to try for any learners that seem to be “plateauing” with their current progress. In older grades this was focused on moving towards “book club” or novel study types of groups where they are reading a novel at their own current reading level together with a group and having insightful discussions about their reading together.

Clothing Donations

Elementary schools regularly face scenarios where an emergency change of clothes is helpful - and the recent “Harvie Pond” we had near the amphitheater was definitely one of them! We appreciate many of our younger students coming to school with some extra dry clothes in their school bag each day.

We are looking for donations of new or gently used clothing in youth sizes 5-10. We generally need pants such as leggings or joggers, and a few pairs of good condition socks or new underpants would also be helpful. If you are able to donate, please drop the items off in the office during school hours. Anything that we are unable to use effectively at the school we will pass along to a charity. Thank you in advance!

Parent survey on School Development Plan and School Fees

At the most recent parent council meeting, we shared information about our current school development plan and the fees that are associated with different learning opportunities.

Thank you for your time!

Ramadan opportunity for learners

The next few weeks bring an important time of year in the Muslim community with Ramadan occurring during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this time of prayer and reflection, families may also plan for their children to fast during the school day. If this is the situation for your child and they would prefer to not be in the classroom during lunchtime, please let us know. We have a few different ideas for how we could help accommodate these children to still have a positive experience during lunch also. Please send any messages to Josie at jccesario@cbe.ab.ca and we will help coordinate this in the office. Ramadan Mubarak!

We will hopefully have the cast in place by the end of next week.
