Dear EHS Families,

Welcome back to school!  We are very excited to welcome everyone back for a year of learning and growing at EHS! We have had a significant addition of new learners over the summer and we are finalizing class lists to try to create the best possible start-up for all learners. Here is some information to help with getting started next week:

Getting Started - Teacher Emails Welcoming Learners & Kindergarten Start-up

For grade 1-5 learners:

  • All teachers will email families by 1:00 pm on Friday, August 28, welcoming learners to their classes and grade teams.
  • If you do NOT receive an email by 1:00 pm, please let the office know either by emailing Mr. Strand at bcstrand@cbe.ab.ca or Ms. Tait at lmtait@cbe.ab.ca and we will support the situation.  Sometimes email addresses change or are entered incorrectly, causing transmission issues. We have a place for every child and will certainly welcome them whether or not they have received a specific email from their teacher. We will also be ready to support families in the main office on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
  • Your welcome emails will include information on your entry door, what to bring to school, communicating with school, etc.
  • All Grade 1 – 5 learners start classes on Monday, August 31 at 8:00 am.
  • Please note that the teacher your child meets on the first day may not be their permanent teacher for the entire year, and we encourage you to prepare your child for this possibility.  The beginning of the school year is a crucial time for establishing a positive learning environment, and I want to assure you that our teachers will work collaboratively in teams to support learners through any necessary changes. We will also provide clear communication and rationale to families when changes need to be made after the first day of classes. These changes would be required if the addition of new learners into classes or classroom dynamics or make-up indicate significant challenges for the year ahead.

Your child will require the following items:

  • Indoor running shoes to be left at the school in the classroom
  • Water bottle (for water only)
  • Healthy packable lunch for grades 1-5
  • Snacks – these may be eaten outside during our daily body break

*Please make sure everything is clearly labelled with your child's name*

For Kindergarten learners only:

  • We start the year with a staggered start to help have a smooth transition and to get an opportunity to help create balanced class groupings that work well together.

Kindergarten teachers will be taking time on Tuesday to create each class list and will send an email to families about which teacher will be their child's primary teacher. All learners will be starting the regular Kindergarten schedule on Wednesday, September 2nd.

All Kindergarten classes will be entering and exiting the school through the main office door at the front of the school. The classrooms have been moved to be right next to the office as we feel this will be a helpful move for Kindergarten learners and teachers.

Drop Off/Pick Up Children at School

Morning plan:

  • For grade 1-5 learners outside supervision starts at 7:50 am in the morning. Please do not drop off learners at the school prior to this time.
  • NEW - The door will open for learners to come inside starting at 7:58 am.* The door will remain open until 8:00 AM.
  • Doors will close and lock at 8:00 AM. If you arrive after this time, please come to the main entrance to enter the school.

After school plan:

  • For grade 1-5 learners they will be exiting the same door at 2:30 pm (12:00 noon on Fridays)
  • For grade 1-5 learners outside supervision ends at 2:40 pm (12:10 pm on Fridays)
  • Learners that are not picked up at that time will then go to the main office.
  • For Kindergarten & grade 1-2 learners: families/caregivers will pick up right at the door.
  • For grade 3-5 learners: families please ensure you have set-up a clear plan with them for where to meet your child or how they will get home. Learners should always come to the main office if they need help with getting home after school.

Kindergarten drop-off and pick-up is the same timing as the class schedule. Teachers will meet the learners at the FRONT DOORS at 8:00 am or 11:30 am for the PM class.

Eric Harvie School has a growing number of learners on the bus every day for families in Rockland Park. We will also continue to have multiple private day care operators that bring students in large vans or small buses. As a result, the parking regulations and signage around our school are important to follow. Here are some basic principles:

  • Drivers please follow all posted signage to ensure parking for buses and safe crossing for pedestrians
  • Parents are strongly encouraged to use ‘Kiss and Drop’ areas to drop off and pick up children before and after school.
  • Our parking lot is designated for school staff or anyone that has designated special needs and a valid handicapped parking permit. Ensuring safety for students in and around the parking lot is an important priority. Please do not park or drop off in the staff parking lot as many students are walking through this area at drop off and pick up times.

Start of Year Forms

Most of the yearly start of the year forms moved to an online format through your MyCBE account. These include the Demographic Verification form that helps ensure we are able to contact you in an emergency, and the annual authorization forms that pertain to photos around the school. Please take a moment to complete these forms in the coming days to ensure we have this information.

We will be sending a couple of paper copy forms home at the start of the year that are not a part of these system wide forms. These will include forms for walking distance learning activities near the school.

If you require any assistance with making your MyCBE account, please visit this website: MyCBE Account

Lunchroom Supervision Program

The lunchroom supervision program at all CBE schools is an optional program. For more information about this program, please see the following link: https://ericharvie.cbe.ab.ca/lunchtime

  • Learners will eat for about 19 minutes and then go outside for another 19 minutes for an active play time.
  • Please send your child a healthy, reasonably sized lunch, water bottle only (no milk or juice please).
  • Please send a recess snack that can be eaten while learners are outside on their morning recess break and held in one hand.
  • We are a nut-aware school with multiple students with severe allergies. Please ensure all food sent to school does not contain nuts.
  • You are welcome to send more than one snack – if a student gets hungry in the afternoon, for example, we will accommodate the eating of an extra snack to sustain learning.

Outdoor Body Break Time

Grade 1-5 classes will be taking a snack and body break time in the mornings each day. Learners are encouraged to take one snack outside with them that is handheld. We will be going outside every possible day, so please send your child to school with clothing that may be layered to adjust to the weather conditions.

Dropping Off Late Students & Picking Students Up Early from School

If your child is late for school, please bring them to the front door and ring the bell – we will note their arrival and make sure they get to their class safely. If you are picking your child up early for an appointment, please email your child's teacher and the office staff (jccesario@cbe.ab.ca) the day of and call the office 5-10 minutes prior to the pickup time, so that we can have your child ready for when you arrive.

Reporting Student Absences/Illnesses

Please call the office attendance line at 403-817-3532 ext. 1 or email our Administrative Assistant, Josie Cesario, at jccesario@cbe.ab.ca  as soon as possible in the morning when you know your child will be absent or late. You will receive an automated phone call for any absences that we record as not “unexcused” or if we do not have information about the absence at that time.

We are truly looking forward to classes getting started and to continuing to build a peaceful community of learners together in the year ahead. Please feel free to contact the main office if you have other questions that we can support you with.
